Adults should be banned from smoking in cars when children are passengers, the new head of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has said.
What do you think? Would you support such a ban?

i think that this is quite obvious - children shouldnt be around smokers - regardless of where (home, work...) so i agree - in such a small contrain place as a car, children should not be exposed to cigarrettes...but i also think that it is not up to the RCPCH to tell parents how to behave, they can recommend, but who is going to be in people's car to police them?

We can only recommend. I put a child as a passive smoker on my asthma template now if either of the parents smoke and it does make the parents think !!

that's a good idea!! there is not a great deal any of us can do if another person decides to smoke - as adults we can move away from smokers if we find it unpleasant - even if they are smoking outside but a child strapped into a car seat in a car has nowhere to go - however previous comments are right - as clinicans we can only advice parents not to smoke around their children what they choose to do with the information is out of our control. and yes how is the situation going to be policed.

All drivers should be banned from smoking at the wheel regardless of who is in the car, on safety grounds. How can they be competent and safe keeping hands on wheel, changing gear and lighting up etc. I felt sorry for that young lady who was fined for eating an apple whilst driving, at least she was trying to be healthy!

I completelty agree with the previous commentor , if they banned using mobile or anythingelse while driving why smoking ? ofcourse they are harming everyone nevermind the children.

Most definitely. I as an ex smoker some twenty eight years ago have always campaigned for not polluting the air with tobacco smoke for myself and others.

I have never smoked and agree 100%, adults should not be allowed ot smoke, it contravenes every safety rule going. I know of a driver who dropped ash on himself whilst i was in the car with him, resulting in a emergency stop so he could prevent himself from being burnt. Car manufacturers need to stop promoting smoking in cars by not having lighters and ash-trays as standard, these shoul dbe an optional extra or not available at all.

I also 100% agree, i am a exsmoker and never smoked around my children no matter were i was. My parents were also smokers but again they never smoked around thier childrenor anyone elses children. So why should peaple smoke artound children at all ?? smokers choose to smoke so why should they smoke around others and put others health at risk? Smoking should not be banned but smokers should be made by law to smoke in a smoking enviroment. I would also like to add that i do not think smokers should be made to go outside in the cold but have smoking rooms like in the earlier years.
