I have just finished the Return to Practice course after a career break of 4 years, I would love to beome a practice course but I am uncertain how to get the experience and what course would be suitable, most jobs seem to want nurses who are already experienced practice nurses and I dont know where to start, thank you, Sue.

Hi! I am a RTP nurse too! I did mine in 2008 following a 10 year gap! I am really keen to become a practice nurse. I have applied for about 4 postions so far and a treatment room job but no success yet. I have an interview tomorrow. Trouble is if anyone has any experience in this area I am overlooked despite my massive enthusiasm. I have enrolled onto a venepuncture course and paid £50 for the pleasure but I want to do whatever I can to improve my chances. I wrote to local gp practices to see if I could shadow the practice nurse but no luck there either. Does anyone know of an actual practice nurse course that can be undertaken? I wish you luck and am crossing everything for tomorrow!

Hi Girls, I have only been a practice nurse for 5yrs. I completed the Enrolled Nurse Conversion, then I completed a Sexual Health course. I then started as a Treatment Room Nurse and built up my expertise and sometimes salary from there. Keep at it. You should contact your lead nurse in your area, they may have a list of jobs avail, or put your name on the list of available nurses to help out. I think if you can do smears then you are of better use. Hope this helps

Hi Sue Well done and welcome back to Nursing.I became a Practice Nurse in 1989 and spent some 14 years in General Practice.I still have a great deal of input in my current post. I would suggest that you look for a practice where there are at least 2 other PNs that you can shadow and learn from. Most PNs have a good deal of autonomy and gaining experience of working and dealing with a wide range of ailments in a day can be both daunting and exilarating.I think if you start as a treatment room nurse and continue your studing with courses that cover Tissue Viability,Cervical screening, asthma,Diabeties.I would if I were you concentarate on a long term condition and become proficient in that area. Also Be sure about your accountability and your role as the Patients Advocate as general practice can be a minefield and is driven by the GP and practice manager who,s job it is to see that targets are achieved.I enjoyed being a PN tremendously and would recommend it to you, good luck.
