I know that many nurses work for an out of hours provider either in addition to their 'day job' or full time. In my experience, many are poorly monitored and come under increasing pressure to make their telephone triage calls shorter and avoid home visits whenever possible. Research shows that 50% of callers can be managed with telephone advice but to do this safely, the call is on average 7+ minutes long. Are nurses taking risks to satisfy their managers and the PCTs who in some cases only pay £3.00 or less per patient for the OOHs service?
